Beware!! These activities can get you FIRED from your work

Most of the states in the U.S. (and in many countries also) exercise at-will employment rules. That is, a company can fire an employee for any reason, unless the issue at hand is protected by law, like gender, race, religion, national origin, or disability.

What it means to us? This means that it could be legal for your employer to fire you over your political leanings. And that’s not the only area. In a piece for Yahoo! HotJobs, Larry Buhl writes about five key areas where a company may scrutinize. According to Buhl, they are:

  1. Smoking, drinking, and overeating: Due to the cost of health insurance, more and more employers view “unhealthy” habits as a threat to their bottom line.
  2. Risky behavior: Likewise, a company might see your bungee jumping hobby as a liability.
  3. Speech: Will your employer consider your blogging to be destructive griping?
  4. Romantic relationships: Dating someone at a competitor’s company has landed employees in hot water. And some employers might take issue with unmarried coupling or even same-sex relationships (federal law doesn’t protect employees from discrimination based on real or perceived sexual orientation).
  5. Political activity: Volunteering for Obama could be trouble if you have a pro-McCain boss, and vice versa.

Union members and employees in the public (government) sector are generally more protected, but private sector employees can be fired at any time. Buhl provides tips from legal experts for protecting your job from unexpected dangers:

  • Understand the concept of at-will employment. Don’t assume that termination must be illegal just because you think it was unfair.
  • Be fully aware of your company’s policies and terms of employment. Read the employee handbook, and ask HR if you have any questions.
  • Be familiar with the company’s internal dispute mechanisms (if any) for filing grievances.
  • Think before you act. Could your employer see your actions off the job as potentially destructive to the company?
  • Don’t disclose. You don’t have to disclose lifestyle choices or off-the-clock activities unless there is a clear link to your ability to perform the job.

TEACH INDIA – Let’s learn to teach

We've just identified the perfect solution to illiteracy – YOU.

After phenomenal success of the “Lead India” drive, The Times of India (TOI) has launched a all-new initiative – TEACH INDIA: Let’s learn to teach. Under this initiative, TOI is encouraging young citizens of India to donate a few hours a week only for 3 months towards teaching underprivileged, undereducated children from our neighborhood. It is not a nation-wide initiative, but it is in fact a nation-building initiative! It is solely based on one single motive – your willingness to teach the underprivileged, to remove the illiteracy from our superb nation and in the process help the children to live a better life.

It involves various programmes including basic education, support classes and even story-telling. The type of programme a volunteer is assigned to, will be decided after initial assessment by the NGO, keeping your location and time preference in mind. One has to devote a few hours every week for initial 3 months, later on s/he can continue depends on the experience / willingness. This drive is supported by almost 60 of India’s most committed NGO’s, corporates, schools, and is recognized by the UN Volunteers.

Come on Indians, the nation is calling you… seeking your selfless help to eradicate illiteracy… to come forward and help change the future of a child forever. Your few hours a week can change the future of our youth! We owe a lot to this beautiful nation; it’s the pay back time now! I have already applied and am hoping that I would get this wonderful chance to serve my country.

If you also share my opinion, hop in immediately: visit http://teach.timesofindia.com now for more details and complete the application formalities. If you happen to be part of this initiative, do not forget to buzz me here – we’ll probably shake hands sometime.

Modus operandi of the ATM thieves...

There have been plenty thefts at / near the ATM machines. The thieves smartly "fool" their victims into handing over their ATM card and PIN number to them...

HOW this happens, you might wonder...

I have finally found the modus operandi used by many of these ATM thieves... Check it out. It will blow your mind too...

Step 1: An individual who apparently is making a bank transaction at the ATM machine.
Step 2: What he really is doing is placing a trap in the ATM machine to “capture” the next user card.
Step 3: Altering the ATMs is a risky business, these individuals work in teams. The lookout warns of any possible eye witnesses / or of the next potential victim.

Step 4: Here we see the next client using the ATM, after the trap has been set. He inserts his card and begins his transaction. WOW! The victim fell in their trap...

CHECK IT OUT HOW...

Finally, BE CAREFUL while accessing ATM machines.

PRECAUTION is better than Cure...

SPREAD the word. STOP ATM thefts.

Sikhs Strike Back - Intelligently!!!

About a century or two ago, the Pope decided that all the Sikhs had to leave Italy
Naturally there was a big uproar from the Sikh community. So the Pope made a deal
He would have a religious debate with a member of the Sikh community
If the Sikh won, the Sikhs could stay. If the Pope won, the Sikhs would leave.

The Sikhs realized that they had no choice. So they picked a middle-aged man named Harbinder Singh to represent them. Harbinder asked for one additional condition to the debate.
To make it more interesting, neither side would be allowed to talk. The Pope agreed.

The day of the great debate came. Harbinder Singh and the Pope sat opposite each other for a full minute.
Then the Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers.
Harbinder looked back at him and raised one finger.
The Pope waved his fingers in a circle around his head. Harbinder pointed to the ground where he sat.
The Pope pulled out a wafer and a glass of wine.
Harbinder pulled out an apple.

The Pope stood up and said, "I give up. This man is too good. The Sikhs can stay."

An hour later, the cardinals were gathered around the Pope asking him what had happened.
The Pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the holy trinity.
He responded by holding up one finger to remind me that there was still One God common to both our religions.
Then, I waved my finger around me to show him that God was all around us.
He responded by pointing to the ground and showing that God was also right here with us.
Then, I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us from our sins.
He pulled out an apple to remind me of original sin.
He had an answer for everything. What could I do?"

Meanwhile, the Sikh community had crowded around Harbinder Singh. "What happened?" they asked.
"Well," said Harbinder, "First he said to me that the Sikhs had three days to get out of here.
I told him not one of us was leaving.
Then he told me that this whole city would be cleared of Sikhs.
I let him know that we were staying right here."
"Yes, and then???" asked the crowd.
"I don't know", said Harbinder,
"He took out his lunch, and I took out mine!!

Balle Balle... Hats off to my Sikh brothers and their sisters...

THIRD best airline of the world - Do you know it?

It is Palmair European Airlines which flies no more than twice a day, has a worker who does the seating plans on her kitchen table, and carries only 70,000 passengers a year. Don't believe me? Read on...

Palmair
A tiny British airline with just one 34-year-old Boeing 737 has been named the third best in the world. Palmair European flies no more than twice a day, has a worker who does the seating plans on her kitchen table and carries only 70,000 passengers a year. But it beat heavyweights including Walsh's BA and Branson's Virgin Atlantic along with 64 others in the Which? poll for best experience and value for money. It was also voted best for short-haul.

Delighted boss David Skillicorn said: “We're just little Palmair with a little Boeing 737. Those who want more leg room get it and families who want to sit together can. Other airlines charge for a service like this but not us. “We've even taken out seats to give the 130 passengers more leg room.” Founded 51 years ago and employing 50 staff, Palmair flies to 14 European destinations including Spain, Tenerife, Portugal, Corfu and Croatia. Worker Teresia Rossello greets every passenger and then waves them off at Bournemouth Airport in Dorset. There are no night flights as they are considered antisocial. Which? said the awards singled out “special” firms. Air New Zealand was joint third with Palmair, behind Jet Airways and winner Singapore Airlines.

Plamair facts
  • 50 staff work there: 25 crew and 25 support staff
  • 70,000 fly a year but only in the day and not before 8.20 am.
  • 1957 - Peter Bath set up the airline and waved off every flight until 2006.

Want to own a gun? Then buy a car...

A Missouri car dealer said on Thursday sales have soared at his auto and truck business since launching a promotion this week that promises buyers a free handgun or a $250 gas card with every purchase.

Max Motors, a small Butler, Missouri dealership that has as its logo a grimacing cowboy wielding a pistol, has sold more than 30 cars and trucks in the last three days, far more than its normal volume. And owner Mark Muller credits his decision to start offering buyers their choice of a $250 gas card or a $250 credit at a gun shop.

"This thing has taken off. Sales have quadrupled," said Muller. The store sells both used and new vehicles including General Motors and Ford products.

Every buyer so far "except one guy from Canada and one old guy" has elected to take the gun, Muller said. Muller recommends his customers select a Kel-Tec .380 pistol.

"It's a nice little handgun that fits in your pocket," he said.

Do you know how Simplicity looks in real life?

According to Indian history, a legendary person has urged the young generation to adopt Simplicity. He said "Live Simple, Think Big."

I know, this is a great theorotical statement with little practical relevance. But recently I spotted such a real-life example of Simplicity, that I am forced to change my opinion...

Check out the following picture of the Tamil Superstar RAJANIKANT...

Now, check the model of the mobile RAJANIKANT uses... He is so down-to-earth and simple, but he is THE superstar of Indian Movie industry, way above Shahrukh Khan & Amitabh Bachchan.

Now, THAT'S SIMPLICITY...

Complex problems solved Simply...

Think Simple to Solve Complex Problems

  1. When NASA began launching astronauts into space, they found out that the astronauts' pens wouldn't work at zero gravity (ink wouldn't flow down to the writing surface). It took them one decade and $12 million to solve this problem. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on practically any surface including crystal, and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 degrees C.

And what did the Russians do? The Russians used a pencil.

  1. One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management techniques was the case of the empty soap box, which occurred in one of Japan's biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soap box that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soap box went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the problem. Post-haste, the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soap boxes that passed through the line, to make sure they were not empty. No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they spent whoopee amount of time and money to do so.

But when a rank-and-file employee in a small company was posed with the same problem, he did not get into the complications of X-rays, etc. but instead came out with another solution. He bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soap box passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.

  1. A 50 feet long trailer having 48" wheels got stuck while entering a midtown tunnel in New York because it was approximately 2.5 feet taller than the height of the tunnel. The fire department and the state department of transportation spent the whole day searching for a solution, to no avail.

Then a child, aged about 9 years, asked his father, "Why can't they take out the air from the tyre tubes? The height will automatically come down.
